Overview

Stretch marks are something that can be very ugly to behold. Nonetheless, they do have myths tied to them, and it is these myths that do cause a lot of grave misconceptions about them that are believed by most. Knowing the myths that are associated with stretch marks is just as important as knowing the facts. Therefore, do read on, and get acquainted with some of the most popular myths that are in connection with the subject of stretch marks on the average.

Myth 1: Stretch Marks Occur Only in Women

Stretch marks are believed to just afflict women. However, this is just a myth, as they do affect men too. Stretch marks can, and do affect men, especially those who are bodybuilders and athletes. This is because they do severely stretch out their skin at times and this is what causes the presence of stretch marks. Therefore, with this said, stretch marks can be annoying for men, in the very same way that they are bothersome for women.

Myth 2: Stretch Marks Only Occur on the Stomach

The myth that stretch marks are something that only happen on the belly is totally false. This is because they can appear on a wide variety of places on the body. Some of these places do include the breasts, the legs, the hips, the lower back, and even the buttocks. Stretch marks can literally emerge on any part of the body where the skin has been severely stretched out enough to cause damage to the tissue or scars.

Myth 3: Stretch Marks do not Change Color

Stretch marks start off as being red, and they then change to skin color, over the course of time. So, with this said, stretch marks are only subject to change color in this instance. They are first seen as being very reddish in color. They often fade, as time goes by, and the colors they fade to are usually more that of a color that is close to skin tone. The fading of stretch marks is something that takes roughly between six to twelve months to happen.

Myth 4: Stretch Marks Can Be Eliminated Completely

Stretch marks are something that cannot be eliminated 100% of the time. This is because they can only be treated, and by being treated, they only can be made to fade away. What this translates to is this. They can be made to fade, to a point, where they do eventually become unnoticeable to the eye. However, this doesn’t mean that they do completely disappear for good, because such is not the case. Stretch marks are something that are treatable as a rule. They cannot be cured though. There is a vast difference between these two realities for stretch marks overall.

Myth 5: Skinny People Cannot Get Stretch Marks

People of all sizes can get stretch marks. This does include people who are skinny, people who are fat, and people who are average in body weight. Sometimes, getting stretch marks can be hereditary, and with this said no more needs to be said. The myth that skinny people cannot get stretch marks are totally untrue. Stretch marks can also afflict anyone of any age or sex. This is because damage to the dermis, or outer layer of skin is something, which can happen to anyone and everyone. When the dermis is stretched beyond its ability to be able to recover adequately, the end result is stretch marks.
